If you think hypothermia can only happen in cold climates, think again. It can and does happen even in the warm waters of Florida, the Caribbean and the Bahamas, all of which are popular cruising spots in winter. If someone falls overboard and you suspect he or she is suffering from mild hypothermia, characterized by shivering and/or slurred speech, first remove the wet clothing. Next, help their body temperature gradually return to normal with blankets, sweatshirts, and whatever other dry clothing you have aboard. However, do not rub or massage their limbs. It actually circulates the cold blood, further dropping core body temperature. In cases of potential severe hypothermia, such as unconsciousness or cardiac arrest, call the Coast Guard immediately for assistance.
