In this information age, it's becoming easier to access navigation information with a multitude of mobile electronics. Your mobile phone is the latest. ActiveCaptain, which provides free details about marinas, anchorages, and even local knowledge on its Web site, now has a program for mobile phones that provides three different applications.
Called ActiveCaptain Mobile, the program offers a chart archives that lets you store thousands of full-color NOAA charts covering the U.S. coastline and Great Lakes on your phone. The second application is a chartplotter, when you add GPS capability; you can track your location and show your position on the marine charts. And with the addition of a data plan, ActiveCaptain Mobile becomes an online marina guide, letting you access user-generated information on marinas, anchorages, and other details contributed by the 8,000 registered users of the Web site.
