Keep Vice Grip Pliers in Your Onboard Toolbox

We were anchoring our Valiant 42 in Honolua Bay on Maui. There were several snorkel boats in the bay and many swimmers in the water. It was very tight between the swimmers and the reef. We were maneuvering, trying to find a patch of sand to drop the anchor, when the engine shift lever on the binnacle abruptly came off. The stainless steel screw holding it to the shaft sheared off. My wife quickly got the vice grip pliers from the toolbox and put it on the shaft. This worked great, and we used it as the shift lever for the rest of our sailing trip in the Hawaiian islands.
