To all new boaters, there is one tip that I have found useful in numerous situations: BoatU.S.'s Vessel Assist or Sea Tow membership!
Most automobile owners are members of AAA or a similar organziation, as they will, at some point, need assistance. The same is true on the water, and without someone to come and help, it could have devastating results. While running out of gas is not necessarily the most common reason for membership, dead batteries are the number-one service in Catalina Island! Ever try using jumper cables from a fellow boater? Not easy, and not usually found! An engine that dies at sea can result from numerous things, ranging from bad fuel to water to an electrical problem. A cell phone (and/or radio) and membership in an assistance organization is a comfort to have.
