Sometimes DIY Is Better - and Cheaper

The marketplace is full of experts who perform maintenance, installation, and repair jobs. When a problem calls for tools or resources that are otherwise unavailable, you have no choice but to call them. But there are reasons to avoid paying hourly rates for services you may be able to perform yourself. The obvious one is economic; another is variable quality. But most important: "Knowing your boat" means acquiring a complete suite of skills and tools. When something needs to be done, your first response should be research. Are there DIY resources online? Can you barter for advice or hands-on training that solves the problem as you learn? Is the special tool available on eBay? Self-sufficiency could be a boat- or life-saver, especially if you find yourself in a place (or economy) where the luxury of a professional is out of reach.
