Staff

Glen Justice is Mad Mariner's Executive Editor. A political reporter with 18 years of experience, he left a staff position at The New York Times in 2006 to launch the magazine.

Glen's work has appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, Newsweek and The Times-Picayune in New Orleans before he moved to Washington D.C. He spent seven years reporting from the White House, Congress, the Pentagon and various other government agencies, including coverage of two presidential campaigns, the Florida recount, and the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Glen serves on the board at Boating Writers International, and is a member of Marine Marketers of America, where Mad Mariner handles webmaster duties on a pro bono basis. He has served as a judge at the IBEX Innovation awards, as well as contests for MMA and BWI.

He grew up on the ocean in California, learning to sail on the San Francisco Bay and making his first blue-water passage – a 17-day trip from Hawaii to Alaska under sail – as a teenager. He currently cruises on the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River with his wife and two young sons aboard the family's 40-foot trawler, Anonymous Source.

Leef Smith Barnes is Mad Mariner's Managing Editor. She joined the magazine in October 2007 after spending 16 years as a reporter for The Washington Post where she covered stories ranging from the Los Angeles riots to the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon.

Leef grew up sailing on the San Francisco Bay. Her family moored their boat Slip Along at the San Francisco Yacht Club where Leef was in charge of outfitting their dog in foulies and cleaning the bilges. Today she is an avid diver, a longtime hobby that has taken her all over the world.

She lives in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband and newborn son.


Diane M. Byrne is Mad Mariner's Contributing Editor. She joined the magazine in September of 2008, after spending 15 years on staff at Power & Motoryacht, most recently as Executive Editor.

Byrne has covered megayachts – those larger than 80 feet – since 1993, and is a recognized expert on the market. She is regularly quoted in mainstream news publications, including The New York Times, Forbes, and Fortune, as well as media outlets like The Associated Press, CNBC and ABC News. At Power & Motoryacht, she was responsible for popular lists such as The Power & Motoryacht 100 and America's 100 Largest Yachts. She continues to contribute to the magazine's megayacht coverage, and maintains a freelance writing business.

In 2007, Byrne launched the Megayacht News blog, which is the only independent, professionally written daily blog dedicated to covering the megayacht market. Megayacht News has been named to the Halogen Guides list of top yacht blogs and has been cited by The Wall Street Journal.

Captain Diana Doyle and Captain Mark Doyle are Mad Mariner's Electronics Editors. They are the authors of the Managing the Waterway cruising guide series. Their company, semi-local publications, is a certified NOAA electronic chart distributor. Mark recently retired from high-tech management, where he specialized in color digital imaging with companies such as Kodak, Agfa, and Xerox. He holds a 100-ton USCG Master's License. Diana has a Ph.D. from Yale and recently retired as a university professor, specializing in research in statistical analysis. She holds a 50-ton USCG Master's License. Mark and Diana cruise on their 36-foot PDQ catamaran, Semi-Local.

Gaspare Marturano is Mad Mariner's Director of Sales and Marketing. He joined the magazine in October of 2008 after holding similar positions at ClickToBoat.com (formerly NavQuest.com) and TSC Consulting Inc. Though he has spent years in the marine space, Gaspare's background is managing information technology at companies such as Primedia Consumer Magazine Group and ProQuest Information and Learning.

Advisory Board

Ted Sensenbrenner is a Program Manager for the BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety & Clean Water and oversees the informal product testing series, Foundation Findings. He and his team have covered a broad range of issues from environmental products such as fuel spill prevention devices to safety products such as man overboard and recovery systems.

Outside of BoatU.S., Ted serves on the Special Risks and Accident Reporting & Analysis committee for the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. He was also instrumental in the Association's Staged Collision series by securing the needed boats and promoting the behind the scenes work of accident investigators. Ted also serves as chairman of the Occupant Protection subcommittee of the newly formed American Boat and Yacht Council Product Interface Committee.

Before joining BoatU.S., Ted delivered yachts and was a professional sailor in the ocean going maxi-yacht racing class. He then served as marina manager at the Mill Reef Club in Antigua, West Indies. After his tenure in the Caribbean, Ted returned stateside to get an MBA and was determined to make his hobby his career. Ted has been with BoatU.S. for 10 years.

Art Pine is a veteran journalist who has spent 40 years in Washington, working for newspapers that included the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and the Baltimore Sun. He is a longtime Chesapeake Bay sailor and a Coast Guard-licensed captain, and a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Art owns a Bayfield 29, a Canadian-built cutter, which he sails on Chesapeake Bay. Besides writing for Mad Mariner, he is a columnist (on China) for CongressDaily, published by National Journal, and is a contributing editor at U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings, a policy journal for the sea services.

Paul's involvement in boating dates back to the early sixties when he began sailing a wooden Sunfish on Lake Erie. Years later he would help found the Hover Club of America, which designs and builds recreational hovercraft.

Paul's dissatisfaction with boating project videos led him and his wife Pat to start a small video production company. Together they have written and produced three videos and four CDs on boat maintenance and upgrade.

Paul is currently based at the head of Chesapeake Bay where he maintains a small fleet of classic plastic sailboats. He writes regularly for SAIL, Voyaging, Power and Motor yacht, Living Aboard, Dockside, Santana and Long Island Boating World. He serves as Technical Editor of Small Craft Advisor and the Managing Editor of Nor'easter Magazine, for which he has written many do-it-yourself articles.

Paul has authored several boating books, including "Capt'n Pauley's Boat Repairs & Upgrades," and a soon to be released book for International marine.

Allyn F. P. Lean is a real estate executive with more than 20 years of experience managing assets, evaluating market conditions and analyzing and reporting asset performance.

He is an expert at structuring and managing profitable transactions from inception to closing, including the execution of comprehensive business plans involving hold or sell decisions and refinancing alternatives to ensure optimal asset performance.He previously served as Vice President for Asset Management at Union Development Company in California and Executive Vice President of C.E. Pickering Investments Ltd. in Florida.

A native Floridian, Shawn has more than a dozen years experience in sales, marketing and advertising in software and Internet application sectors.

Shawn currently directs marketing for a global, rich-Internet application development firm headquartered in Washington, DC.

Previously, Shawn ran advertising and international business development for a global online marketer for which he negotiated advertising deals with Fortune 500 companies, and managed the development of the companyís international practice.

Shawn is a dot.com bust survivor and a former technical recruiter.

John Chalfant is a lifelong boater who grew up learning to water ski on the Feather River in Northern California. He has lived on the water most of his life, including eight years on the delta of Vietnam, and five years along the klongs of Thailand. After retiring from a U.S. Foreign Service career, John returned to his first love – boating (he currently owns two powerboats).

As an advisor to BoatU.S., John played an important role as the west coast BoatU.S. "Ambassador" during the transition as BoatU.S sold its retail operations and Vessel Assist Towing was acquired.

He was the Secretary and Treasurer of the Pacific Inter–Club Yacht Association of Northern California for seven years, and publisher of the Yachting Yearbook of Northern California for eight years. John and his wife Carmen today remain active members of the Bel Marin Keys Yacht Club as Delegates to Recreational Boaters of California, and in the Emeryville Yacht Club– John as Past Commodore and Carmen as Treasurer. In addition, they own and operate Iguana International, a tour company headquartered in Nicaragua.

Mark Mannino has overseen the technical design and construction of Mad Mariner since its inception. He has more than 20 years of programming experience, and has worked with Internet technologies in the telecom, biotechnology, entertainment and publishing sectors. His experience includes positions at Shockwave.com and CondeNet, the online arm of Conde Nast publishing. He enjoys rides on boats of any kind, usually from friends who proffer, and misses his college days of recreational sailing on Mission Bay in San Diego, California. Mark is currently working with an Internet company in New York City, where he lives.
