Rubrails
By

Life intruded the past week or so and I haven't gotten to work on the boat much. That is one of the more frustrating parts of boatbuilding as a hobby... when you are ready to work, sometimes you can't. Weather, lack of materials and most often (for me, at least) lack of time keeps you from it. But I did have a chance to try my rubrail mounting method.

A friend pointed out that screws needed to be set "back" from the sides so that if I do nail something fairly hard and the rubrail deforms, that the screws aren't left sticking out proud and chew up whatever I hit. I commented that I would rather it get chewed up than my own boat, but he did have a point.

With this in mind, I mounted it with screws close to vertical, set pretty much over the hull side. I tried countersinking the heads, but that didn't work in the PVC. I went ahead and mounted them as a "test" with the screw heads up a bit... I may just grind them flush and smooth it out.

Whatever, it seems to have come out pretty well, at least to me.
