Walk the docks here in Miami, especially Collins Avenue where the megayachts live, and you see some interesting stuff. A jacuzzi tub on the swim playform. A car on the bridge deck. A helicopter on the bow. You know, the basics "” stuff we all should have.

The editors here started keeping a list of these options, at first for ourselves. The next time we buy a boat, we wanted to make sure it had the goods. Then we realized that readers too could probably use a checlist of essential items.

And so, here it is: 10 things that just about every boat should have. Did we leave anything out?

GLEN JUSTICEForget the tender. The well-appointed boat these days uses a helicoper to get on and off.

GLEN JUSTICEAgain, the tender is passe. To get around, you really should carry a car.

GLEN JUSTICEIf you have a car, you need a garage -- a transom garage, to keep the inflatable (above) and the fleet of water bikes and other toys (below) that you'll need to keep yourself occupied.

GLEN JUSTICEGLEN JUSTICEIf you don't go with the garage, opt for the large transom gate. It makes a nice entry.
