It could have been so much worse.
Gustav is making its way further inland, spawning tornadoes and dumping water over large parts of the South. The Hydometeorological Prediction Center says overall, rainfall from Gustav will be between 5 and 10 inches. But pockets will see more.
Hardest-hit will be Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi, with isolated spots getting up to 15 inches. Missouri and West Central Illinois may see 3 to 5 inches, up to a maximum of 8 inches, the agency says. The outlook is similar for the northeast corner of Texas and far eastern Oklahoma.
