Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2009

This Is Not a Fish Story

Awash in a boat show sea of gear, nothing stands out more perhaps than a wall of fish. Big fish. Really, really big, colorful fish courtesy King Sailfish Mounts. The company was formed in the late 1980s by marine artist Raymond Douglas to offer trophy seeking sportsmen an alternative to the boating of Atlantic Sailfish.

We know, it's the kind of expensive ($800 for a Tarpon!) artwork you figure has a limited market. But Mariner was in the booth just a few minutes talking to salesman Nick Yanuzzi and no less than two would-be customers came calling. One of them, Jim Scherr, was looking for, ahem, two eels to mount in his office next to the, um, Hammerhead.

Yanuzzi says  King Sailfish has to kill one fish in order to make the mold, but does indeed promote catch and release. Better one dead, then a hundred, right? As for protected species, they use previously mounted animals to create their art (think Loggerhead turtle).
