GLEN JUSTICE
Amphibians, by Ocean LED, offer some attractive features for marine lighting — no matter what you drive.
As the name implies, Amphibians can be used underwater or topside. They are self-contained LED lights — come in colors like blue, green and even red — and they require no major through-hull fitting or large hole. No matter where you mount them, all that is required is a 3/8-inch opening to run the wire.
The potential uses for the Amphibians are many: transom, tabs, gunnels, T-tops, engine brackets, trailers or even on spreaders, masts and rigging. Ocean LED claims that the marine lights have a 40,000-hour lifespan, with minimal maintenance. It also says the lights resist corrosion and solvents on deck, and barnacle growth below the waterline.
Amphibians were developed as a low-cost alternative to traditional lighting. They are not cheap, but in the context of marine light systems — which can get very expensive, particularly below the waterline — that is relatively true.
The model line offers three, six- and 12-light configurations, with list prices from about $400 to almost $900. Street prices are no doubt less, but you do have to factor in installation (or do it yourself). Ocean LED offers mounting brackets and hinges to fit the lights.
