GLEN JUSTICE
The Bio eStart by Finscan is an engine starting device that uses fingerprints.
Controlling either gas or diesel engines, the Bio eStart requires the captain's fingerprint to start the engine, rather than a key or code. The unit will store up to 1,000 fingerprints, which accommodates crew and service personnel, and comes with two remotes that can override the fingerprint requirement.
The unit, which costs about $2,700, has a safety feature for gas engines: It will detect gas fumes and automatically start the blower, declining to start the engine until the fumes are removed.
