Aquos Yachts

About six months from now, the expedition yacht you see here will hit the water, from a new company that promises to "appeal to people who want unique experiences . . . to explore the world."

Those are the words of Jim Gilbert, a familiar name in yachting circles. The founding editor of ShowBoats International, he's currently a consultant and among the team members of Aquos Yachts which aims to change attitudes about expedition yachts.

Now, you might be thinking, "What's wrong with the current attitudes?" Nothing – except for the fact that few owners of these types of megayachts have truly pushed their vessels to the far reaches of the world. In Gilbert's opinion, there's been a focus on making massive vessels with luxury spaces, rather than emphasizing the overall yachting experience. Aquos Yachts wants to put the emphasis back on the voyage, not volume. It also wants to do so in a more environmentally responsible way.

All-in-One

I recently acquired a new handheld VHF radio for use aboard my boat. It's Cobra Marine's MR HH475 FLT BT. Yeah, that model number's a mouthful, but don't let that scare you. It actually makes sense if you break it down. It's a "marine radio", it's "handheld", it "floats", and it has "Bluetooth." So naturally it's the MR HH475 FLT BT. Got it?

This is one snazzy radio. I've had a chance to experiment with its innovative features, so I can say with confidence that I look forward to putting it into service aboard Two Lucky Fish, my C-Dory 22.

Portholes

Went to do a little painting and sanding the other day and wound up cutting more holes in my boat. Dane got me going on the cabin side "porthole" windows and we got a good bit knocked out.

Did get the front and rear door windows sanded, along with some filler I had put on the transom. Then moved to sanding the hull a bit prepatory for another coat of paint. Was going to get Dane to work on that but he lobbied for the portholes.

Capt’n Pauley on cleat installation

I love Cap’t Pauley’s sketchbook. This time, he’s tackling the intricate mysteries surrounding cleat installation. It’s all about keeping water OUT, you know…

Blue Eyes

A yacht is, naturally, a way to take a journey. Blue Eyes, the latest 60-meter (197-foot) displacement yacht from CRN, puts an interesting twist on the concept.

The owner and his wife commissioned the craft as a lavish second home, and they do therefore spend a lot of time onboard, neither of which is terribly surprising. The twist comes in that they also wanted to take friends and family along – on a virtual journey, through the Occident and Orient, told via a very unique interior.

The "passage" begins the moment they step onto the aft deck. A crystal globe takes center stage here, etched with the continents and countries that are represented throughout the rest of Blue Eyes. It's easy to imagine this becoming quite a conversation piece itself, rather than the area simply serving as an outdoor place to gather and chat.
