Solution for Documentation Dilemmas

Royal Oceanic D-ISM screenshot

Let’s face it: The amount of paperwork related to the operation of a megayacht can wallpaper a house. And as the LOA of the yacht increases, the total becomes staggering.

That’s among the reasons why Royale Oceanic’s D-ISM was just introduced. Standing for “Documentation – Information System Management,” D-ISM is a secure software system that helps captains and crew organize and cope with the myriad regulatory documents they need to keep onboard.

Royale Oceanic offers a multitude of consultancy services for yacht purchase, construction, conversion, and management, with naval architects, engineers, and captains among the experts on staff. To date, the firm has been involved in more than 150 superyacht projects. Its clients are worldwide, ranging from the United States to Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and Asia. In speaking with these owners and their crew, Royale Oceanic realized there was a real need for easing the paper workload – which entails not just organizing the documents but also regularly updating them. Therefore, D-ISM was developed with direct input from the very people who need to manage it all.

Here’s how it works. Royale Oceanic stores all pertinent paperwork on a shore-side server. It delivers each file to the yacht’s onboard computers, via automatic download (through a secure connection, of course). This way, in case of a computer crash onboard, nothing is lost forever. In addition, there’s no chance of a crewmember altering a document, whether inadvertently or deliberately. They can also look at a document in real time with the team at Royale Oceanic.

If you take a look at the screenshot closeup here, you’ll notice it employs a rather straightforward menu. This allows for quicker access of information. Indeed, Royale Oceanic’s staff demonstrated it for me over the course of about half an hour, and I was impressed with its simplicity and intuitive nature. I particularly liked how items that needed to be followed up on were flagged in yellow or red, with red indicating they were overdue.

Don’t just take my word for it. Capt. Giles Sangster of Talitha says that the Royale Oceanic D-ISM system has simplified “what was previously a very time-consuming job. The whole process of managing the yacht’s essential documents is now done via a very user-friendly interface, which we were happy to assist in developing from a user’s perspective.”
